So, that scene when Cas went shopping wasn’t just comic relief. It wasn’t just a cute, funny way to show him how he cared about Dean’s opinion of him and was seeking his forgiveness. 

No, that scene was much, much more than that. It was foreshadowing.

Cas is trying to figure out what humans want/need because he wants to get on Dean’s good side again. But look at how difficult the task is for him.

He stares questioningly at toilet paper, likely because he has seen it pretty much everywhere humans are, but he has never seen humans use it or needed it himself.

He’s aware that humans need to eat and he knows that some of them like eggs, but he has no idea how to handle or prepare them in a way that’s suitable for consumption.

Even after years of being in his vessel, he’s not as in touch with it as most humans are with their bodies, considering he knocks down an entire shelf by accident.

And this whole time he either does not ask for help or properly communicate with the cashier about what he wants.

This scene was so important because it’s showing us how ill-prepared Cas is to living as a human. He doesn’t know how to respond to basic human needs because he’s never had to before. He doesn’t know how to properly communicate (and not everybody is as patient or understanding of him as Sam or Dean). And he still doesn’t ask for anybody’s help, despite being completely out of his element.

This scene shows us that season 9 is going to be rough for Cas. Not only will he have trouble handling his own body and doing what he needs to to care for it (such as cooking, bathing, etc.), but he also won’t want to ask anybody for help, much less Sam and Dean who he probably feels he has burdened enough.

This scene was, admittedly, funny and cute. But it wasn’t just about Cas and Dean’s relationship. This was so much more about Cas and his incredibly poor understanding of what it is to be a human. But we do know that he has been paying attention to at least one human in particular, so hopefully he’ll continue to learn what he can.
